Are burst pipes really that costly?

88% of burst pipe claims are made between December and January with an average household claim reported at £7,000.

A leading insurance company stated that, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), the trade body for the insurance industry, insurers pay out around £2.5m every day to customers who’ve made ‘escape of water’ claims on their home insurance.

Although many escape of water claims happen in winter months due to frozen pipes that have burst (during freezing weather spells as many as 3,500 claims have been recorded for burst pipe damage in a single day, costing the average household £7,000), there are plenty of other reasons why leaks occur.

How does it prevent Legionella?

When it comes to outside bib taps it’s not just the cold that we have to safeguard against. When we have a volume of water that is not used regularly, there is a risk of water stagnation and bacterial growth.

Legionella bacteria takes 72 hours to proliferate in stagnant water over 20°c and when transferred to a susceptible host becomes Legionnaires disease.  Legionnaires disease is a form of pneumonia and has extreme flu like symptoms, which can be fatal.  The most common way to contract it is through inhalation of small water droplets which are generated in showers, hot tubs and sprinklers/hosepipes.

To remove this risk you have to guarantee regular water movement or remove the ‘under used outlet (ACoP L8).  The KEMPER FROSTI® tap automatically eliminates this risk

How does it work?

Unlike regular outdoor taps, the KEMPER FROSTI® tap is designed to seal off within the warm bricked area of your home. Once the tap is turned off, it drains in full. This simple innovation ensures that absolutely no water is left sitting in the tap or pipe when not in use and that means there is nothing left to freeze!

Does it require insulation or isolation?

The product is designed in such a way that the check valve is installed within the “thermal envelope” of the building. Once the tap is shut off *closing the check valve* the water automatically drains out of the pipe and tap itself. It’s a free-flow design, so there are no pockets for any water to sit in, stagnate and freeze. Therefore, no insulation is required.
